We make a category that has been quiet for thirty years answer for itself.
Ardent is a small UK manufacturer of connected portable traffic signals. We were founded in 2021 by an engineer who’d run too many disputes for two-decades-old kit. We build slowly, support for ten years, and prefer a number we can publish.
The story is unromantic.
In 2019, an A40 closure overran by eleven days. The contractor said the signal had failed; the council said it had been moved; the supplier was unable to produce evidence either way. The dispute ran for six months and cost the public purse £180,000.
The same week, four similar disputes were active across the North-West. None of them were resolvable on the evidence available, because the evidence available was a paper sheet and a battery voltage reading.
It was not a software problem. It was an absence of instrumented hardware. So we built one.
02 · How we work
Numbers we can publish.
We do not quote internal claims. Runtime, uptime, MTBF – every figure on this site is one we will defend in writing. If we can’t defend it, we don’t print it.
One product, made well.
The category does not need novelty. It needs a unit that runs for a decade. We have one product family and we will resist adding a second until the first is unimproveable.
Slow and supported.
We support a unit for ten years from the date of last sale. Service intervals are at month 36 and 72. End-of-life recovery is included in the price.
The audit trail belongs to both parties.
Telemetry is shared with the council and the contractor on the same terms. We do not sell access to evidence we did not generate.
